The simple truth is that research costs money. The Krigolson Lab is supported by several funding sources including the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, NASA, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Sadly, all of the grant funding we receive does not cover all of our expenses. As such, we welcome any donor support for the research that our laboratory has done and will be doing.
Currently, we hope to use donor support for three very specific needs:
1. Updating our electroencephalographic brain wave systems. Currently, in spite of the cool research we are doing our main pieces of hardware are close to 10 years old. We need to upgrade this equipment to maintain our place at the leading edge of neuroscience research in Canada. While Dr. Krigolson is writing grants to buy this equipment, the funding percentages for research grants in Canada are quite low - somethings less than 2% - and we may not get funded via grants.
2. Updating our computer systems. Running a laboratory like ours requires a large number of computers, and as with our other equipment, our computers get old as well and we are in dire need of new systems. How old is your cell phone? Like most people, we aim to replace our computer systems every couple of years to stay at the forefront of computing technology.
3. Supporting undergraduate and graduate students. Some of the students in our laboratory have been able to secure external awards to support their studies and conference travel, but not all are able to do so. As such, we use donor money to directly support the students that make up the Krigolson Lab.
You can help support our research by donating through our UVic donation page. All you have to do is follow this LINK and select "Krigolson Lab" under the designation tab (see picture below). Thank you for your generous support! Please make sure you select Krigolson Lab from the drop down menu (unless of course you want to support another great research initiative at the University of Victoria!).
