Krigolson Lab FAQ

An information repository for lab members.
LAB EDI POLICY
The TAN Lab recognizes the profound benefits of a diverse membership. A diverse lab membership benefits everyone because it supports creativity in terms of approach, experience, and learning.

  1. Gender and Sexuality
  • All lab members and study participants must be treated equally and without discrimination related to gender or sexuality.
  • Remember that, for some people, disclosing pronouns may be a source of anxiety, so don't force the practice on anyone in the lab.
  • Consider including your pronouns on name tags, in email signatures, and other online messages to help foster a culture of inclusivity.
  • Consider incorporating neutral language in greetings, and especially group greetings. Instead of "Hey, guys!" or "Welcome, ladies!” try using "Welcome, everyone!" to make sure all participants feel acknowledged, safe, and included.
  • If you make a mistake with someone’s pronoun and they correct you, say "Thank you" instead of "I am sorry." That way, you still own the responsibility for your language use, and you also express gratitude rather than sorrow – a much more positive way to respond to a correction that can sometimes feel like an already negative confrontation.
  • Practice using someone's pronouns so that you can get this right as soon as possible. Having to correct others who misgender them is exhausting for many transgender and non-binary people.
  • Use "they or their" wherever possible, especially when no pronouns have been stated as preferred, as opposed to "his or her." It is good practice, and it can really help a person feel more comfortable in the lab.
  • Respect a person's privacy and journey. Never ask anyone about their transitioning status, even if you know they are trans.
  • Remember that you cannot tell someone's gender just by looking at theirappearance. Consider sharing your pronouns first as a way of inviting others to share theirs with you when they feel ready to do so.
  • If you feel that you are being treated unfairly because of your gender, perceived gender, sexuality, or perceived sexuality, please report it as soon as possible to any PhD student or Dr. Krigolson so that a corrective course of action can be determined. If, for some reason, an issue is beyond this scope of command, please report it directly to the EPHE Director, Dr. Sandra Hundza.
2. Racialized Persons and Indigenous Persons
  • Each lab member and lab participant or guest shall be treated respectfully, regardless of actual or apparent racial background or ethnicity. 
  • Except where it arises directly in research methods or when volunteered without prompting or pressure, no person shall be asked about or have comments made about their country of origin, skin colour, hair type, home language, accent, style of dress (except as related to lab dress code in Section 3.2), or food choices.
  • Lab members are welcome to share information about their own ethnicity at any time. 

3. Persons with Disabilities
  • Within the existing physical environment, all lab members must make an effort to ensure that all necessary spaces, equipment, and supplies are accessible to all other members, including those with wheelchairs, prosthetics, and other mobility aids. 
  • Each lab member and lab participant or guest shall be treated respectfully, regardless of actual or apparent disability or level of physical ability. 
  • Except where it arises directly in research methods or when volunteered without prompting or pressure, no person shall be asked about or have comments made about any apparent disability.
  • Lab members with disabilities are welcome to share information about their own disability at any time.​
Where accommodation of any kind is required for a lab member to carry out their duties, it is incumbent on the member with the disability to inform a senior lab member of the specifics of their needs. To make this as easy as possible, senior lab members will ask new lab members, as a part of the onboarding process, to inform the lab of any needs they might have. 
Lab MEETINGS
KLab meetings are open to all students in the lab – both undergraduate and graduate. We typically discuss research projects at these meetings, have presentations on experimental design and data analysis, review papers, or discuss lab administrative issues.

LAB MEETINGS ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS.

Please note there are times when we need to have graduate student only meetings, or senior student only meetings (PhD only) and we will have to ask people not in these groups to leave the laboratory for integrity.
The time and location of the lab meetings are consistent for the semester and will be posted on the laboratory calendar and our general Slack channel.

Note. For reasons of mental health, and sanity, all 30 minute meetings will end after 25 minutes. All 60 minute meetings will end after 50 minutes (for some cool supporting research see: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/brain-research).

Finally, everyone runs late sometimes. However, the meeting clock (25 minutes, 50 minutes) will always start at the schedule meeting time and end of time – no exceptions.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT CONTRACT
In the Krigolson Lab, we have a research assistant contract that outlines expectations and other lab policies. All research assistants will read the agreement and sign one each year.

STUDENT TRAVEL POLICY
Graduate Students

Each graduate student will be be awarded a lab travel grant of up to $1000 to spend at their discretion to attend and present at academic conferences each year (September 1 to August 31). Graduate students are expected to travel to one conference a year and present data. Graduate students may only access these funds if they present data. Receipts are required for reimbursement.

Graduate students are expected to use UVic internal grants to support their travel as well.

​Students are also encouraged to apply for other grants to support their travel or use grant funds awarded to them (e.g., Mitacs).
GANTT CHART FOR GRADUATE STUDENT PROGRESS
Create a copy of the Gantt chart for yourself in Google Sheets and share it with Olav. Fill in as much as you can. We will review during our weekly meetings.

  • “Year_DataType_ProjectName_[LastName]”
  • If the project is shared, do not include [LastName]
  • Ex. “2025_EEG_SREBlackjack_Hammerstrom”
  • You should at least have folders for Data, Ethics, and Writing/Manuscripts 

  1. Register with compute canada

    3. Olav will have to review and approve your application
  2. Register for MFA if you have not already (if you have, you probably see a Digitial Research alliance of Canada tab in your Duo push app or Yubikey)
    1. Go to https://docs.alliancecan.ca/wiki/Multifactor_authentication#Registering_factors
    2. Follow the instructions for setting up MFA
  3. Create a site manager for our server. 
    1. Launch FileZilla and select “Site Manager”
    2. From the “Site Manager”, create a new site (or edit an existing one)
    3. On the “General” tab, specify the following:
      1. Protocol: “SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol”
      2. Host: fir.computecanada.ca
      3. Logon Type: “Interactive”
      4. User: [your username]
    4. On the “Transfer Settings” tab, specify the following:
      1. Limit number of simultaneous connections: [checked]
      2. Maximum number of connections: 1
    5. Select “OK” to save the connection
    6. Test the connection
  4. Connect 
    1. File > Site Manager > select your site and click Connect
    2. Enter your compute canada password 
    3. Go to your duopush app or yubikey, refresh the passcode, then enter the code into the prompt.  
  5. Navigate to our folders, /project/6003841/nelab/nelab/Projects


  1. When uploading files, CHECK THE USER AND GROUP
    1. If you notice the files you updated do not have your username set as owner and the group as def-krigolso, you need to manually change the group. 
    2. Open up a terminal (Mac) or windows command prompt. 
    3. First, you can try basic sign-in
      1. “ssh [email protected]”
      2. Input your password (the text wont show up)
      3. Go to your duopush app or yubikey, refresh the passcode, then enter the code into your command prompt. 
    4. Once you’re there, try:
    5. “chown -h -R $USER:def-krigolso -- /project/6003841/nelab/nelab/Projects/NameofSubfolder”
    6. If basic sign-in doesnt work, try nibi:
      1. “ssh [email protected]”
      2. Input your password (the text wont show up)
      3. Go to your duopush app or yubikey, refresh the passcode, then enter the code into your command prompt. 
      4. “ssh [email protected]”.
      5. Repeat ii-iv. ​
